Mao’s revenge

The world’s strangest anthem, by a long stretch, is Nepal’s. Sayaun Thunga Phool Ka (Made of Hundreds of Flowers) sounds like it was recorded on a cheap keyboard in a kid’s bedroom. There are no trumpets, no military drums, and not even much in the way of grandeur. Which is why I’m about to get on a plane to Kathmandu to find out more about it.

I already know it’s a story that takes in Bollywood, a Maoist revolution and a one-time king who now sells turpentine for a living. But I have a feeling there will be a lot more besides.

I’ll post an update in a fortnight.
